Chapman Academy
Advanced Defensive Pistol / Shotgun

(3 day Program)

This program is for participants who have completed the Chapman Academy Introduction to Defensive Pistol Course OR, who by virtue of training and experience (including training from other institutions) may be acceptable for this advanced level defensive program. Because of this, students eligible for this level of training must have had previous (pistol) experience with various exercises including moving targets, shooting on the move, and the tactical use of cover. We will teach you the shotgun specific portions, building upon that knowledge.

00 buckshot exercises, multiple targets
In this situation students are engaging multiple targets in the "B" zone with 00 buckshot.

The training scenarios provide the opportunity for students to apply their new shooting skills in practical defensive situations, including precision shooting with buckshot in a hostage rescue scenario (we do this primarily to teach why it's advisable to not try for this, in the real world).

The shotgun for class may have a bead, rifle, or ghost ring type sighting system; we will teach you to effectively use what you have.

Engaging multiple targets using revolving cover, on target 3 of 4

The Academy's course objectives are to teach students to move quickly, shoot effectively, and use cover. However, this program is done at more advanced skill levels. It includes tactical live fire clearing exercises, as well as night shooting. Exercises are done with pistol and shotgun, including transition from shotgun to sidearm.

Engaging moving targets
Shooter is placing multiple shots on a target moving right to left.

Distances in the course will vary from 4 to 25 yards, with an occasional shot at 100+ yards. Students will learn how to properly transition between the various defensive loads based upon the threat and distance. This course is biased towards the closer ranges that typically occur with civilian and police use of the "riot" gun and pistol.

Slugs just fired at 50 yards, using cover

This course involves tighter time limits, and increased accuracy requirements when compared to Introduction courses.

After completion of the scenarios, a qualification course is fired with a score of 70% required in both handgun and shotgun to qualify for a certificate.

Students in the Advanced Pistol / Shotgun Course will need to bring a variety of gear and ammunition to complete the course. To assist you, a detailed list of equipment needs along with a list of local lodging and maps to the range are available.
