This 3 day program is for participants who have completed the Chapman Academy Introduction to Defensive Pistol Course. The Academy's first training priority is that students receive maximum benefit from the program. Because of this, students eligible for advanced level training must have had previous experience with various exercises including moving targets, shooting on the move, and the tactical use of cover. As with all Chapman Academy courses, we require safe gun handling and range etiquette at all times. We accept minors who are accompanied by parent or legal guardian and will comply with these conditions. Seniors are also welcome. No one is required to perform any physical activity which they feel incapable of or unsafe doing.

| In this situation the student has engaged the target to her left with two rounds, taken cover and engaged a second target with two rounds from behind the barricade and is now shooting at the moving target. All in less that six seconds. |
The training scenarios provide the opportunity for students to apply their new shooting skills in practical defensive situations.
As stated in the Introductory course, the Academy's course objectives are to teach students to shoot effectively, move quickly, and use cover. However, this program is done at more advanced skill levels. It includes turning movements and shooting from other positions.
This program is also structured to minimize classroom time and focuses on practical hands-on and individual range instruction. A brief on-range lecture and demonstration introduces each section. At the conclusion of the demonstrations, students then perform practical range exercises with as much individual instruction as possible. The exercises in this course require more shooting, a greater skill level, and higher levels of concentration than the Introductory course. This is an advanced course beginning with multiple round exercises and concludes with multiple targets, often two or more. This formula is applied to all the various blocks of instruction in this program.
The Advanced 1 Course starts with higher level drills and then expands into more demanding exercises which would apply to a broader range of actual defensive situations. These blocks of instruction include close range defensive distances, various techniques of shooting from cover, shooting on the move in various directions to the targets, night fire and flashlight techniques, and multiple moving targets at various speeds, directions, and distances.
All these blocks of instruction and advanced drills apply to the Chapman objectives of effective shot placement, moving quickly, and using cover.
They are, however, advanced techniques which require greater proficiency, experience and training in order to maximize the value of the course.
The students of the Advanced 1 Course apply their new skills and proficiency in realistic training scenarios. These advanced scenarios differ from the Introduction scenarios in their degree of difficulty and complexity. Each student is reviewed and given the opportunity to shoot the scenario a second time. After completing the scenarios a qualification course is fired with a score of 70% required to qualify for a certificate.
Students in the Advanced 1 Course will need a minimum of 1500 rounds of ammunition to complete the course. To assist you, a detailed list of equipment needs along with a list of hotels and maps to the range are available.
